Carved, Wooden Boxes, Process and Pain

“Does it hurt you to make these?” She asked.

“Well, yes.” I responded.

Pain is my shadow. It is with me, often forgotten. It intensifies at the beginning or the end of a day. It flairs, it changes, it follows.

My stopping points are punctuated by pain. I carve until I cannot. Pain darkens the content and adds contrast.

My mixed-media carved, wooden box pieces represent a joining of the methods and materials I use. Traditional intaglio, lithography, and relief printed collage elements merge with digitally printed collage elements. I work back and forth collaging and carving until a box is resolved.

The images below show the process of a carved, wooden-box piece in progress.
